This piling project, completed in May 2023, was a very large, wrap-around home extension in the Ardwick area of Manchester.

Piling was required because of a large pipe running underneath the entire length of the extension’s 12.7m outer wall. The builder, who was referred to us by another contractor, booked a free site with Rhino Piling and we attended the next day.

After inspecting the site, Jonathan designed the piling scheme shown in the adjacent drawing. The scheme involved 23 x 150mmø bottom-driven mini-piles, the amount usually involved in a small new-build house. 12 were positioned conventionally, in the centre of the beam, with 11 making up multiple cross-sections across the pipe, protecting it and providing the necessary load capacity for the extension.

With the site located in the heart of Manchester, the project was only a short trip across Denton Island and down Hyde Road. Access was via an alleyway between two terraces, which wasn’t a problem for our Grundomat piling system; and over a period of 4 days, the piling team of Danny and Neel:

  • Drove all of the piles to refusal at 2m
  • Wrapped the pipe and other surrounding pipes in mineral wool
  • Installed 42m of pre-fabricated steel ring beam
  • Poured, poked, tamped and levelled 9 cubic metres of C35 concrete to complete the piled foundation

Piling projects in Manchester like this are our bread and butter. We complete them frequently, there’s likely no ground issue we haven’t encountered, and builders love our professionalism, punctuality and knowledge. So get in touch with confidence and we look forward to hearing from you!
