Project Snapshot

  • Type: Commercial new-build development
  • Location: Macclesfield
  • Client: Crowstone Ltd
  • Piles: 42 x 168mm
  • Pile depth: 15+ metres

THE CHALLENGE

The first phase of our involvement was driving piles for plots 1, 2 & 3 (for a total of 42), where the structural engineer required a depth of 15-20 metres. This proved time-consuming for our piling teams, as the piles were beginning to set at 6-8 metres.

This – paired with the job-completion estimate being reduced from 18 days to 9 days – made for a rigorous working schedule for our operators.

WHAT WE DID

Piling

When starting the job, we used a combination of drop weight and pneumatic mole piling, with plenty of hands to aid with speeding up the process. When the moles were plateauing at 4-6 metres, we quickly realised the job wanted two drop weights.

After the first day on the job, 14 piles were driven to depths of between 4 and 10 metres, depending on when they began to slow or bounce.

After some grit and determination from our operators, followed by support from our technicians, all 42 piles have been driven successfully to 15+ metres.

Steel Ring Beam

In less than one working day, the plots were shuttered, and the steel ring beam was successfully installed along with tie-beams for added rigidity. This allowed the operators to begin driving piles in the next phase of the project.

Concrete

Utilising a boom pump, the grade C35 concrete was installed at a steady rate (taking four wagon-loads) the footing eventually took 35 cubic-metres on this first plot. With the houses now out of the ground, the builder has begun laying bricks in their next stage. In the meantime, our piling teams are piling the second phase with 14 piles concreted already.

THE OUTCOME

The first phase of this project with Crowstone Ltd is now complete, with the next stage already underway. Because of our efficiency on this first phase, we will be progressing with all future plots in this development.
