Project Snapshot

  • Type: Residential house extension
  • Location: High Peak
  • Client: Homeowner
  • Piles: 17 x 150mm
  • Beam: 28.1m
  • Concrete: 10.12 cubic metres

THE CHALLENGE

Unlike typical single-storey house extensions, this project continued around the side of the property. This means the overall scale is increased significantly, and the number of piles is reflective of this.

With each added pile, the time taken to drive them is carefully considered. This is to allow a mutual understanding between the homeowner, builder and ourselves on how long this stage of the project will take.

WHAT WE DID

Piling

The most time-consuming part, of course, is driving the piles to “set refusal”, the point in which the piles slow down to a pace of 10mm over 10 seconds, or slower.

Pile depths on this site reached between two and eight metres (caused by changes in ground conditions) and in a three-day timeframe, the last pile was completed in the morning of day three.

Steel Ring Beam

Ring beam was installed by a second team during the last driving of the piles. Typically jobs like these only require a two-person team, but a second team made the tying-in of the ring beam much quicker.

The trench was then shuttered using ply board, preventing the poured concrete from overflowing the borders.

Concrete

In the early afternoon, a volumetric concrete truck delivered a C35-grade mix, the final step of groundwork before this customer was officially out of the ground.

From here, the builder could begin brickwork within 48 hours of the concrete being poured. Another happy customer!

THE OUTCOME

In three days, our teams drove seventeen piles to depths averaging 6 metres, installed and tied-in over 29 metres of ring beam, installed and reinforced shuttering, and facilitated the delivery of over 10 cubic metres of concrete.
