Thirsty Trees

In April 2022, a builder named Richard and his client Dez were told by a Building Control Officer that their wrap around extension in Sheffield needed piling due to the presence of large trees next door. Despite being in construction a long time, Richard had never had to pile before, so he fired up the Google machine and found Rhino Piling.

Soon after his enquiry, our Technical Advisor Jonathan Wolowicz made the trip from Manchester to pay Richard and Dez a visit. He explained what the piling process would entail step-by-step, and due to the trees next door, he also informed them all about heave. He explained how the trees are extracting a lot of moisture from the soil; and if anything were to happen to those trees, i.e. if they were to be cut down or die, the moisture would instead remain in the ground, causing it to swell upwards, which is not good news for any structure built on top!

Void Former

Thankfully for Richard and Dez then, Jonathan also told them that we can install Clayboard void former, which protects against heave by allowing the soil to expand and contract without affecting the foundation, as the image below demonstrates.

Site Preparations

After getting the go ahead from homeowner Dez, our Operations Manager Howard Pratt took over, and told Richard exactly how to prepare and mark-out the site. This is crucial because if the footings aren’t dug properly it can delay us starting, and therefore delay the rest of the project and its contractors. Improper footings can also mean having to pay for extra, unnecessary concrete; which isn’t cheap at the moment!

x12 150mmø piles, 24m of steel ring beam and 5.7 cubic metres of concrete later, and Richard and Dez were out of the ground.

Feedback

Richard, as a builder who’d never had to pile before, was extremely pleased with the way Jonathan explained everything to him in a professional manner, and the way Howard helped guide site preparations, which ultimately saved his client money and time based on the work advised.

Homeowner Dez was also thrilled, and had this to say on Google:

“Many thanks to all at Rhino for your efficiency and professionalism. Thanks specifically to Jonathan and Howard for all your advice and for the lads who did an excellent job. Thanks again.”
