For this project, our piling operators Sean, Liam and Reon had no trouble whatsoever in driving the eight piles to a set at around 4m. The builder was on-hand to provide any information needed to aid with getting our customer out of the ground.
At one point, the air winch – used to extract the pneumatic mole – had a lever break at the connecting valve, but a replacement winch was delivered to site within the hour to ensure it didn’t slow the piling team down.
Piling
Using our tried-and-true pneumatic mole method, we drove eight piles to depths of up to four metres. Rather than using the block & tackle method, this team prefer the air winch method for speeding up the piling process. Each pile driven consisted of two halves: one starter and one follower. Once the starter pile has been driven, the follower pile is positioned on top and then welded in place, before being driven further until it’s set.
Steel Ring Beam
A total of 12.6 metres of ring beam was installed on this site, which is designed to provide suitable reinforcement for the entirety of the concrete foundations. It’s important that the piles and beam are connected using down bars. This ensures all of the steel in the foundation is connected.
Concrete
We employed Chorley Concrete for this job, as our own firm Rhino Concrete were fully booked with other customers. We often use our own concrete for jobs but always prioritise our external customers over our piling jobs, so as not to let anyone down. The concrete was grade C35, and installation took around 45 minutes.
This project was completed in the timeframe given to us by the customer, and with every aspect of the job going to plan, the end result will allow for this homeowner to begin building on top of their new sturdy foundations!
