The Different Methods of Piling

By 17/04/2023June 28th, 2023No Comments

Piling is a great method to provide foundational support when constructing a building or structure of some sort. This method is done by installing vertical poles into the ground. Piling has been used for thousands of years, since prehistoric times, humans have used wooden poles or stilts to support buildings such as homes and storage buildings. Fast forward to 2023, we have seen new methods, techniques, materials, and machinery to help us construct a building safely and efficiently.

We even have a type of piling called mini piling which has been designed for those awkward spots where regular piling methods may be difficult. In this article, we’ll be exploring the different types of piling.

Drive Piling

First up is drive piling. This form of piling involves forcibly drilling the piles into the ground. You would normally see this being done by using a specific piece of machinery which is referred to as a Pile Driver. The pile driver functions by using hydraulics to elevate heavy weights and then it uses that weight to hammer the pile into the ground. You will see these Drive Piles made from steel, wood, or concrete.

Screw Piling

If the name wasn’t already a giveaway, this form of piling involves screw piles which are shaped like a helix and then they’re physically screwed into the ground just like you would screw into wood or plasterboard. This option can be beneficial thanks to its fit for purpose and ergonomic value. They also allow more surface area thanks to the shape of the screw. Screw piles are often made from steel.

Bored Piling

Now while this type of piling can sound misleading, it means boring a hole before you insert the piles. Pile boring starts with the hole being drilled into the ground before the metal casting is applied and filled with remaining liquid concrete, leave it to set, and then you’re all good!
