Read on as we briefly touch upon the different types of piling foundations that are utilised within the piling industry.

Construction Method Piles

Sheet Piles: Used in order to provide lateral support rather than support a structure itself, sheet piles are used in a variety of different ways. For example, they can be used to prevent river bank erosion and to keep loose soil in place around foundation trenches.

Load-Bearing Piles: The main purpose of load-bearing piles is to transport the weight of a structure to the soil using vertical loads. This is done by transmitting the weight through weak soil into the stronger and more compact soil which lies below.

End-Bearing Piles: These types of piles work in a similar fashion to load-bearing piles, however the weight passes through the tip, which rests on a strong layer of soil. As a result, end-bearing piles act a column in order to transfer the weight safely.

Friction Piles: Using the friction force that exists between the surface of a pile and the soil that surrounds it, friction piles transfer the weight of a structure to the soil itself. This is a method that requires attention to detail and is calculated by multiplying the surface area of the pile by the friction force.

Material Piles

Timber Piles: With a 30 year longevity guarantee, timber piles tend to be placed underwater and used for harbours and ports. They are a great material choice because they offer easy installation and are incredibly economical, however they are not suitable for use as end-bearing piles.

Concrete Piles: These types of piles can be purchased as either pre-cast piles or cast-in-place piles, however the one that is used will depend on a variety of factors. With this said, concrete piles may be reinforced with steel but they are a strong and durable material choice.

Steel Piles: Often found as a hollow pipe, steel piles are filled with concrete in order to create a strong foundation that can bare the load of a structure. They vary in size between 10 and 24 inches in diameter and are a popular material option for end-bearing piles.
