Things You Need To Know If You Are Extending Your Home: Part 2

There comes a time when every homeowner wishes they had more space. But upscaling to a bigger place is an expensive venture, meaning most property owners have to find another way.

Extensions are the best way of giving your home more space – maybe you need an extra bedroom or simply more storage? In a previous blog post we discussed four things you need to consider if you are thinking of building an extension. Here we discuss a few more things that need serious consideration:

  1. Architect

It’s always important that you use a professional to design your extension. Big projects such as loft conversions or external home extensions aren’t simple DIY jobs, they require serious planning.

If you are planning any major alterations to your property, then the planning application may have to include plans produced by a qualified architect and other consultants such as structural engineers before it is given the go-ahead.

  1. Impact On Neighbours

We always have to be considerate of our neighbours because nobody wants to fall out with someone when they have to live next door. If you’re making major alterations to your property, you have to consider whether those alterations could damage their property.

You also have to consider the social aspect – your plans may impact on their quality of life, especially if building work will take an extended period of time. It is wise that you keep your neighbours fully informed of your intentions right from the start.

  1. Living In A Conservation Area

Depending on where you live, there may be strict government controls dictating what alterations you can and cannot make. If you don’t know if you live in a conservation area or not, check with your local council, or refer to your architect.

  1. Up, Down, Or On The Side

Where you choose to extend your home is the first step to consider for your plans. Loft conversions are increasingly popular as you don’t need to extend your building outwards in any direction and a lot of homes already have attic space available to renovate.
