Residential Piling vs Commercial Piling Approaches

Here at Rhino Piling, we know how much of an impact a poor foundation can have on the longevity of a building as man-made structures are often vulnerable to even the most subtle movement of soil. In order to ensure that our clients receive the very best value for money, we have decided to go over some of the differences between residential piling and commercial piling. After all, piling is a popular foundational approach that transfers the weight of a structure to the strong soil found deep within the earth, however, it may differ depending on the type of building it is being applied to. Read on to find out more…

Residential Piling

As the name suggests, residential piling is carried out on houses and other dwellings where people live. After all, these buildings still need to be supported by a high-quality foundation as subsidence is thought to be much more common here thanks to the materials that houses are made from.

Mini-piling is a foundational approach that can be applied to any soil type and involves screwing or driving pile casts into the ground and then filling them with concrete. They are a popular residential solution because they are affordable, eco-friendly and can be used in locations with reduced access.

Underpinning is another residential piling method which transfers the load of a structure that is showing signs of subsidence in order to prevent further damage from taking place. It is incredibly economical because building a brand-new foundation can be very expensive. Plus, underpinning can also be applied to existing builds too.

Commercial Piling

Traditional piling is applied in a commercial and industrial aspect because these types of buildings are often heavier than residential houses and require a much more robust foundation. Using industry standard machinery, concrete or steel piles are driven deep into the ground in order to bypass the weak soil on the surface and ensure that the weight of a structure is spread as equally as possible.

In addition to this, groundworks are a commercial application that involve the implementation of reinforced steel cages around cast-in-situ concrete beams. This creates a link between each pile in order to provide singular strength rather than multiple points of strength.

A foundation is the bread and butter of any building and that is why both residential and commercial property owners should invest in quality and longevity. For all your piling Manchester needs, get in contact with a member of the Rhino Piling team today!
