How to protect building sites during adverse weather

Summer construction projects have been faced with a number of difficulties in recent years, especially in the UK. Whilst most will remember the summer of 2018 fondly; long hot summer days sent hundreds to the nearest beer gardens, however, building sites all over Britain were struggling to get work done with soaring temperatures making work difficult and even putting workers health at risk.

This summer we are seeing the opposite to last year. The mercury isn’t reaching the heights it did a year ago, but unfortunately we are seeing unprecedented rainfall which is throwing up a whole host of different problems on site.

Here at Rhino Piling we have to make sure we are able to operate in the event of any weather; from scorching sun to frozen grounds, we need to know exactly how to combat adverse weather so that foundations can be built safely and in a timely manner.

Ice and rain

One of health and safety’s main worries is slips and trips on a building site as these account for most on-site accidents each year. When there has been a large amount of rain or temperatures have dropped enough to cause moisture to freeze, these hazards become even more lethal.

There are a number of tricks that we utilise to make sure these don’t pose too much of a threat to our workforce. Salt grit can be laid down on dedicated walkways to prevent people from slipping on patches of ice and grippy tracks and tiles or heavy-duty mesh can be laid over muddy surfaces which allows rainwater to permeate whilst giving workers good traction underfoot.

Excess water

Large amounts of water are usually a problem at the tail end of winter when melting ice and snow and further rainwater combine. We are seeing problems with excessive water this summer, however, as large amounts of precipitation continue to fall all through recent months. When there is a large amount of water flowing on site it is important that it flows where we want it to. This is why downpipe fixtures are placed to help us drain pools of water and direct them to designated outlets.

When we undertake piling in Manchester, we ensure our sites are safe and secure to work on by preparing for the worst possible weather conditions and come equipped with the tools to deal with whatever mother nature throws at us.
