Different Types of Piling Rigs and Their Applications

Every building project is a unique undertaking with its own hurdles to overcome. The different types of ground, building design and available space all require a unique type of building technique in order to get the building erected properly.

Because of this there is a huge range of piling methods available but knowing which is best can be challenging. To be able to identify which piles will be best for your project, check out our expertly compiled guide on the most common piling methods:

Open Bore Piling

A pretty universal type of piling which can be used on both large and smaller sites and with varying types of ground substrate. A ‘Rotating Auger’ is used to remove soil down to the chosen depth before steel cages are used to fill the holes. The method causes little vibration making it more suitable for use in basements of terraced properties.

CFA Piling

One of the quietest methods of piling, CFA Piling is popular within local community builds. It involves taking auger out of the pile bore very slowly whilst pumping cement through the auger stem into the pile.

Retaining Walls

In all basement construction, retaining walls are a must have. They hold the sides of the hole during excavation and prevent soil from falling back in.

Contiguous Bored Pile Walls

These retaining wall types are mostly used to hold back soil while excavations are being done. The type of soil on the property will determine how large the gaps between the adjacent piles are, making them a valuable tool for basement projects where each aspect is different.

Secant Bored Pile Walls

In a similar vein to contiguous pile walls, secant bored pile walls are also used as retaining walls in construction. The difference is that secant piles use an innovative interlocking system of shafts which tends to look more attractive onsite and also works better where grounded conditions are less than optimum, or there are higher water tables.

Mini Piling and Restricted

These are particularly useful in restricted spaces where the width and height of a building means that equipment needs to be compact. Mini piling in Manchester can be installed using many different methods, including, rotary, drilling, jacking and impact driving, which makes them a popular choice for many construction companies.
