Raft Foundations vs Pile Foundations

By 12/09/2022June 13th, 2023No Comments

Usually, the taller the building is, the deeper the foundations are. If your building is designed to be several stories high, it will need high-quality, extremely heavy, and deep foundations. If your building is lower and covers more ground, then you will be able to manage with a much shallower foundation. Identifying which type of foundation is right for your construction project is vital to ensure that your final construction is stable, safe, and won’t suffer from subsidence!

The two most common foundation types are:

  • Pile foundations
  • Raft foundations

What is the difference between the two?

The difference between these two types of foundations is that the raft foundation is perfect for shallow foundations and pile foundations are the best for deep foundations.

The design of raft foundations is made of a mat of concrete that is placed on the ground or above the ground. Then the foundation is spread across the whole area of the building to support the heavy structure of the columns and walls.

However, the design of pile foundations prioritises two significant components. The components are either a pile group or a pile cap.

There is a noticeable difference between these two foundations, it is also worth noting that raft foundations prove to be cost-effective in short term, but pile foundations are built for the long term.

We think that pile foundations are an excellent choice to consider because it is great for soft soil, if you chose raft foundations, you are looking at having to improve the quality of the soft soil. You can do this by a technique called Sand Compaction Pile. This will just add more unwanted time to your projects.
